Mary Lou Sinclair is a career health and safety professional who has been working in the industry for over 30 years. She joined BGIS Global Integrated Solutions in 2015 and is the VP of Health, Safety and Environment for BGIS North America and UK. With a team of professionals across North America, she provides leadership and services to support BGIS clients, stakeholders and team members to protect health, safety and the environment. A strong and talented HSE team has been built and developed over the past 6 years amid unprecedented growth. In late 2018, under Mary Lou’s leadership, BGIS was one of the first Canadian organizations to achieve registration to ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
Mary Lou is the lead of the Infectious Disease Team (IDT) associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic Plan for North America which provides technical support in the areas of health and safety, strategic sourcing, IT, HR, business continuity and communications in response to this emergency. She joined BGIS from Ontario Power Generation (“OPG”) where she and her team implemented British Standards Institution’s 18001 Occupational Safety and Health Management System (“OSHAS”), becoming first company in Canada to achieve OSHAS 18001 registration at the Niagara Plant Group. She also led the organization’s pandemic plan as well as the Ontario Complex Group Lockout Compliance plan. Both of these initiatives have been recognized by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Labour respectively as models in leadership and partnership between government and industry.
Mary Lou has also contributed to external industry associations through her work with the Ministry of Labour, Canadian Standards Association, and the Canadian Electricity Association. She was the energy industry employer representative on the CSA’s Workplace Ergonomics Standard and the revision of Z1000 Occupational Health and Safety Management System. She is currently the Vice Chair of the CSA Z45001 Standard committee. She served on the Canadian Mirror Committee for the development of an ISO international OSH management system standard which was issued in 2018, ISO 45001. She has also participated on national efforts to improve Young Worker Safety and is a Director on the Business Council for Occupational Health and Safety. She is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, Registered Occupational Hygienist and Certified Registered Safety Professional. Mary Lou’s career builds upon her degrees in chemistry and biochemisty from McMaster University. Regarding external pursuits, she has been involved in Stand Up To Cancer’s major fundraising drives in the US and in Canada since 2010.
