With a long family history in the labour movement, Andrew decided to shift his career studies from economics—he was going to be a stockbroker—to health and safety. “It might sound idealistic,” he says, “but I wanted to contribute. I wanted to make work a good place to be.”
Now with more than 25 years of global health & safety experience, he consults in areas such as best practices for health, safety and wellness; auditing; risk management; violence and harassment; and psychological workplace health.
He is a strong advocate of psychological hazard prevention, noting that mental health issues now contribute to illness and disability as much as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). He is involved in several CSA technical committees for physical and psychological health & safety standards development and is Vice-Chair of the Ontario Workplace Health Coalition.
